Is Aladdin, Ali Baba, & Sinbad the Sailor part of the 1001 (Arabian) Nights stories?
Q. I am getting conflicting websites that says yes it is, and others that say it was not part of the original 1001 Nights collection, but added in by European translators.
Asked by Miss Cutie - Fri May 2 14:05:09 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes - these are all Scheherazade's stories which she tells over 1001 nights. It's a body of work I sure wish we had in European tradition. If you EVER get the chance - there's a very old translation of the 1001 Nights by Sir Richard Burton in the 1800's. The "Nights" are an absolutely vast set of stories when they're all translated. In Burton's translation there must be 20 books. Very hard to find - much worth the reading.

Does anyone know if this story is in the 1001 Nights/Arabian Nights compendium?
Q. I think this is a loose plot outline: A king or nobleman is holding a banquet when a well-to-do knight who has been travelling arrives and presents his daughter with various magic gifts, for example a mirror, a ring, and also shows the king how to use his horse that can vanish and be summoned. The story then follows the daughter putting the gifts to use. If this is a tale in One Thousand and One Nights/Arabian Nights, does anyone know the title?

A. I read some of the stories but I am not sure if i read that one but if the daughter puts the gifts to use then the story could be in there because every story in that book had like 5 short stories inside one story...

Where is the original copy of 1001 Nights (Arabian Nights)?
Q. I know it was made around AD 800-900. I was wondering where you can find it and how much it would be priced.
Asked by ana - Mon Nov 23 21:14:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As you say, the earliest mention of the book was in the 9th Century, however the earliest known copies date from the 14th Century, the so-called "Syrian" version. This is the version that Sir Richard Francis Burton translated into English, which is the most famous English version. This 14th Century version is the earliest surviving edition. It is priceless, you can't buy it and it's currently held at the Bibliotheque nationale de France (the National French Library). There's probably some value worked out for insurance purposes, but it would be many millions of Euros.

A. "The Book of One Thousand and One Nights" a medieval Middle Eastern literary epic which tells the story of Scheherazade (Shahrzad in Persian), a Sassanid Queen, who must relate a series of stories to her malevolent husband, King Shahryar, to delay her execution. The stories are told over a period of one thousand and one nights, and every night she ends the story with a suspenseful situation, forcing the King to keep her alive for another day. The individual stories were created over many centuries, by many people and in many styles, and many have become famous in their own right. Notable examples include Aladdin, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor.

A. I think it is hard to tell how many stories are in the original Arabian Nights, since the manuscripts which exist are copies of older versions and in the process of copying, stories have been constantly added. I have read some of them. I dont know exactly how many stories are, because they are counted by nights in my edition and in one night Scheherazade could tell only one story, but also, she could tell three or more. I believe the idea of "1001" nights is symbolic. It is supposed to represent a circle - no beginning, no end, because somewhere in the middle of the whole book, Scheherazade tells the story of the actual scene itself: the story is about how she is telling the Sultan all these stories, in order to save her life. By this,… [cont.]
